What is the challenge?

In the lead up to Mental Health Awareness Week where the theme is “Moving more for Mental Health” we have devised a fundraiser to get everyone moving more in May!

Raising awareness of the benefits of movement for physical and mental well-being and raising money for the Horizon Fund, created to support students with bursaries, scholarships, and opportunity awards.

On Wednesday May 8, 2024, we will be asking people to move their body and join us in a campus-to-campus challenge to walk, run, row, swim or cycle the miles from our Stoke campus to other campuses around the world.

The campaign will run from May 8 to May 31 and the aim will be to:

Complete the distance from the Stoke campus to:

  • Stoke to London – 159 miles
  • Stoke to Stafford to London – 180 miles
  • Stoke to Stafford to Lichfield to London – 220 miles
  • Lands' End to John o’Groats - 603 miles
  • Stoke to Stafford to Lichfield to London to UNICERT College, Athens – 3491 miles

Each time a goal is hit, the next campus will be added to see just how far we can all go whilst raising some much-needed funds for the Horizon Fund.

How to get your miles in?

From 7am – 9pm our Sir Stanley Matthew Sports Centre is open on the Stoke campus and is free to use for May 8. Inside there are:

  • 3 treadmills
  • 3 spin bikes
  • 3 rowers

Or maybe swimming is how you’d like to get involved:

Swimming at Fenton Manor for staff and students – 8-8.50am/9.15-12/1.30-4.14

For those who want some fresh air we have walking routes for the Stoke Campus.

In London there is:

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Walk: 7.9km Est Time: 1hr 39 https://www.alltrails.com/en-gb/trail/england/london/queen-elizabeth-olympic-park-walk

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park: 4.5Km Est Time: 51 mins https://www.alltrails.com/en-gb/trail/england/london/queen-elizabeth-olympic-park

Why are we fundraising?

To support students during their time at Staffordshire University.

The money raised from the campaign will support the unrestricted donations within the Horizon Fund which supports students with opportunities that they would otherwise miss. University is more than the degree, it is the networks made, the connections sought, and the experiences had that make work equipped, world ready graduates. These are our alumni ambassadors of the future, and the ones who will change it.

Who will this help?

Our students at all levels – from undergraduate to PhD - ensuring they can continue to achieve their ambitions and aspirations, support themselves, making their dreams a reality by the end of their degree.

How to submit your miles?

Email developmentoffice@staffs.ac.uk with a photo of you at the start of your miles and again at the end of your miles. Please include a photo of your smart watch, phone steps or whatever method you are using to track your distance.

These may be shared across the Horizon Fund social media channels to raise awareness throughout May.

FAQs

What is the Horizon Fund?

The Horizon Fund is the Staffordshire University Charity; supporting our students in need, making a difference, and helping transform their lives by helping dismantle barriers.

When does it start?

Move in May launches 8 May 2024 with the aim to go campus to campus through mileage. It will end at 11:59pm 31 May 2024.

How do I get started?

Make a pledge to raise money and to move in the name of the Horizon Fund. Once you have, email us at developmentoffice@staffs.ac.uk and let us know! We will make sure to shout out about your support, add your mileage to the total, and ensure every penny goes towards our students.

Is there a minimum fundraising amount?

No, there is no minimum fundraising amount. Through a combined effort, we hope to raise £1,000 - so all we ask is you raise as much as you can. As a thank you for raising or donating £50, we will send you an e-certificate and a wristband.

What movement can I do?

You can do any movement you would like for Move in May. From walking, skipping, cycling, to skateboarding, swimming or rowing. However you wish to complete the miles is up to you.

Can I take part as part of a team?

Of course! Why not try a relay walk, or friendly competition on who did the most steps? Raise money separately or part as a team, we are all in this together.

Am I or my sponsor able to give cash or cheque?

If someone wishes to donate by cash of cheque, please contact us at developmentoffice@staffs.ac.uk and we will happily talk through the options available.

Is there a signing up fee?

There is no fee at all.

Can I take part in Move in May without fundraising?

As Move in May is a fundraising challenge, we ask that you please try and fundraise or donate.

Without donations into the Horizon Fund, we are unable to support students, however we do understand that everyone is in a difficult situation and may not be in a position to donate.

If you are unable to raise funds at this moment in time, please get in touch to discuss other avenues, or keep us in mind for when you do have ability.

If you have any further questions, please get in touch at developmentoffice@staffs.ac.uk
