Description

As part of the Staffordshire Scarlettes Cheerleading Teams 20th Anniversary, we want to continue the legacy of the cheer leading team and continue to support our athletes who join us every year. Cheerleading is notoriously an expensive sport with competition entry fees for university teams being £45-£95 per person. We normally have around 30 people on one team, and this means one competition can cost us £2,500.
Alongside entry fees we have to pay cross over fees for each team an athlete competes on, and we offer 6 teams at this university, and we want to continue to be able to enter at least two competitions a year to give our athletes a chance to perform and be able to do the sport.
Alongside competition entry fees, transport hire, venue hire – to have access to high ceilings, a full sprung floor and increase training times. This costs us around £3,000 per year. As the cost of living has increased, so has the cost of everything else. We have expanded and developed so much over the years to provide inclusive sport at different levels to allow everyone to enjoy cheerleading and build their skills. However, with the increase cost, and the cost of living also effecting students we want to continue to provide each student with an opportunity to join cheer leading, and for us to continue the momentum we have built for years to come.
Cheerleading is a growing sport in the UK, and we are dedicated to providing our members with a chance to experience the sport, make friends, stay active, have new opportunities and continue to thrive. Every year we expand the number of teams we offer, and this promotes inclusivity and a positive environment, improving well being and staying active. Representing the University at a National Level.
We want to be able to support our members, keep the sport inclusive and accessible and give an equal platform for our team to perform.

Donations are applied to...

  • Venue Hire for access to high ceilings and sprung floor so we can train safely and appropriately
  • Safety Equipment such as mats
  • Competition Opportunities to support members in being able to pay for their entry fee
  • Transport Hire to ensure we can afford to get athletes and spectators to and from competitions, and access to venues with required facilities

Personal Message

President of the Scarlettes Laura Potts:
"We have seen able to see the successful increase of members joining, growing to love the sport and going into my third year of presidency we have been really stuck on which competitions to enter as their prices have increased, alongside the cost of living which is also affecting students. This is becoming a barrier for our sport and student participation, and we have had to cut funds down elsewhere to continue to be inclusive.
With the horizon fund this would allow us to offer an experience similar to other universities in which athletes would have the chance to train in venues similar to those they would compete at i.e., on a sprung floor. Continue to offer different teams that provide inclusivity to access to the sport and so we don’t have to increase membership costs and ask for additional contributions throughout the year as we haven’t previously, but currently cannot afford to offer the experience we have provided previously due to cost.
We usually compete at two competitions a year, however we have had to cut this down due to doubling in price, even though we are creating more opportunities for people to perform on campus, we want to be able to continue to provide opportunities to compete in which alumni have had previously."

Why are donations necessary?

The cheerleading team fundraiser aims to raise as much money as possible for the Horizon fund which supports students in a variety of ways – we provide an opportunity of sport to students, continuing to widen access and participation, and helping students reach their potential.
Overcoming basic financial obstacles and providing an enrichment of activities to be part of a team, experience something new, and enhance their university experience and provide us with a way to ensure each member has access to appropriate safety equipment, venue practice, ability to compete nationally. This would allow us to be able to ‘Cheerlead’ without any competitive aspect or performance opportunities we wouldn’t be able to continue to have a cheerleading team, as this is a crucial element of any team sport.
