Bertarelli Foundation Bursary
At Staffordshire University, we place students at the heart of everything we do, and supporting the Horizon Fund, helps support every student with ambitions and aspirations to be the very best they can be, and take a step towards their brighter future. This is a belief that echoes across our connected community - with the many donations of gift, time, and opportunities, our students have experienced the generosity of our donors and have already achieved incredible things.
One-way students are supported via the Horizon Fund is through the Bertarelli Foundation Bursary.
Exclusive to Staffordshire University, the Bertarelli Foundation bursaries aim to boost retention and progression of students from non-traditional entry routes to give them the best opportunity to transform their lives. The fund ensures a vital supply of new graduates into the NHS, teaching, education and private sector - many of whom are bringing important life and work experience, communication and other transferable skills as they enter the workforce after changing their life path.

"The Bertarelli bursary has helped me a lot in the last semester. This year has been tough for a lot of us and the bursary allows me to focus on my education and supports it very well. The last semester taught me a lot about time."

"The first bursary payment of this academic year has funded my new volunteer role in a young offenders prison which has helped with transport and training materials to further my studies and experience in this degree."

"Last semester I learned about a lot from forensic osteology to glass analysis in forensic science. However, the most thing I enjoyed doing was a literature review and the research that I did and the knowledge that I gained from it. I even liked it so much I have expanded and have put a proposal in to do something similar for my final year project.
The money from my first payment was used to get correct stationary, tools, and the books I required for further reading, notepads, printer ink, printing paper, a bookcase because I have nowhere to put any of my books, and many more things. The payment helps with my studies massively."
- Aneesa
"The money from the previous payment helped with buying books and I also saved some towards my C1 license which I will need to have completed before we graduate so the next bursary payment will help with that also and more book ect. Its such a big help means I don't have to worry about doing so many shifts at work and can concentrate on getting high grades (hopefully).
Thank you for all your generosity over the past 3 years."

"The bursary has been fantastic for my second year, as we move into pharmacology units, there’s so much more to learn so I’ve been fortunate enough to have the additional funds to purchase apps and books with have increased my knowledge base. I’ve been able to book myself onto a separate course to learn about all of the new medications relevant to my mental health nursing specialism too. My personal goal this year is to complete my viva voice assessment, which is a huge challenge for me due to my anxiety, an in person voice examination is quite stressful. I’m prepared and focused to achieve this though."

"As I have more commitments, I can't always pick my daughter up up. It helps with getting suitable clothing for interviews and I can rest easy, that my car is good to drive as I am travelling about a lot more for commitments. It has made such a huge difference this bursary to my educational journey. I can really concentrate without the worry of how I'm going to afford doing the things required of me.
My appreciation to everyone who has made this bursary possible. It has made unmeasured differences to my life. Thank you!"

"The bursary that you have provided has really been invaluable in helping me to progress through my degree and helped to provide things such as course materials, travel expenses and everything else that has been needed to successfully complete my course. I feel very greatful to have been a receiver of this bursary and not only to receive financial support but in the knowledge that you believe that my future career is worth investing in has been a huge driving force in my desire to work hard and achieve."

"The Bertarelli Foundation Bursary has helped me immensely, the money I receive assisted me in buying essential books for my final year of my Social Work degree, which will enable me to further my learning, especially coming up to completing my placement and entering into a job. The funding additionally supports me whilst on placement as I had to travel to my placement and also work from home. This gave me the freedom to not have to budget or worry about where I would find the money to support me in paying for the extra gas and electricity I used whilst at home. I will be using the next bursary payment for fuel and gas and electric whilst working from home.
Overall, this money has helped me to gain a 2.1 within my second year as I am more relaxed whilst at university and as a mature student, with a family to look after with the help of the Bertarelli Bursary.
Thank you ever so much for this opportunity."

"I have used the bursary to become a member of the Agricultural Law Association, who hold events and courses aimed at those interested in the many aspects of agricultural law. Unfortunately, due to covid i was unable to physically attend the Christmas meeting, however they are holding an annual conference in June which the bursary will go towards in helping me fund expenses to ensure I am present and able to gain those valuable contacts within the agricultural law industry and gain valuable knowledge.
I have also purchased various property and land law books, perhaps more than I need to to gain a first in the module however, I believe this module is vital to any law student as it is the most applicable to everyone. I am also in the process of purchasing a desktop computer which will enable me to study online more efficiently.
My goal for the end of this academic years is to continue to gain a first in every module. Additionally, I will have completed all my training contract applications as well as attended various law events which up until now have been restricted by the pandemic."
